Great Minds Think Alike – and appreciate the same GORGEOUS flowers!

The Hollywood Farmer’s Market is a colorful place.  With fruit and vegetable vendors, musicians and, well, Hollywood natives, there’s never a shortage of sights to see.  But this past weekend, one flower stall stopped me in my tracks.

Silverlake Farms' display at the Hollywood Farmer's Market

Silverlake Farms’ ranunculus alone were priceless, but then there were the anemones, and all sorts of other wildflowers so bright and colorful they looked good enough to eat.  Or at least good enough to randomly grab a bunch, tie it up in some ribbon, and send any high-end bride straight down the aisle.

But the best part came when I asked owner/urban farmer Tara Kolla if she sold wholesale.  She asked if I was in the industry, and I explained I worked for a floral design studio in Palm Springs.  “Oh yeah” she replied. “They were here last week.”  Apparently Greg and Al had been at the market during their pre-Oscar delivery,  and had the identical reaction to her deliciously beautiful flowers.  And when I talked to Greg, he told me they would be working out an arrangement to get their hands on some of Tara’s blooms.  “Weren’t those ranunculus amazing?” Greg asked.  Great minds think alike!

White ranunculus. Good enough to eat!

My Little Wedding Advice Shop: Brides, To Thine Own Self Be True (and Caring)!

My Little Wedding Advice Shop: Brides, To Thine Own Self Be True (and Caring)!

A bride of ours has had a hard week. Two of her bridesmaids have had “midnight meltdowns” requiring phone conversations into the wee hours. Her work hours stay the same, as always, so she’s tired and stressed out. Not exactly optimal conditions for managing her own wedding planning tasks which are weighing on her, making her more stressed out, so she’s staying up late…it’s a vicious cycle.

For the best wedding day, be kind to yourself in the months beforehand

Does this sound familiar? Are you a “rock” in the lives of a   lot of the people you know? Well, now that you are in wedding planning mode there’s someone more important that you’ve got to make your number one priority: yourself. It’s hard to say no, and to tell people you can’t be available in ways you have been, but planning a big celebration of a rite of passage is no small task, and comes with stressors of its own, both physical and emotional. You can’t spend your energy taking care of everyone else in your life because there will be nothing left for you.

So we advised our bride to gently ease herself out of the role of “rock,” because she’s got a rock of her own now, and will want all her energy to ride the rollercoaster that is planning a wedding. Good advice for any overextended bride. As RuPaul says, “if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are going to love somebody else?” She always asks if she can get an Amen at that point – and I will give one. Amen!

Grandma’s Advice That Shows (Or Doesn’t) on The Red Carpet

In terms of clothing, Grandmas across America have a lot of advice.  Among my favorites:

“Wear a lined bra so your nipples don’t show. You’ll look like a lady.”

“Never get rid of rhinestone jewelry, it always comes back into style.”

and the all-time classic,

“Be yourself.”

That last one was on display for all the world to see last night in Hollywood at the Academy Awards.  You can always tell who feels comfortable in their gown, and who got talked into a dress she was told would be “faaaaabulous” by some stylist trying to get her name in the paper.

We had a lot of love last night for Melissa McCarthy, nominee for best supporting actress for “Bridesmaids.”  They were ripping her dress to shreds on E! during their pre-show when her stylist came on and told the story of how they collaborated on the dress, and how happy she was with it, and how she loved it more than any dress she’d ever had.  And she looked great.  Why? She was happy. She was comfortable.  She was being herself.  (Note to Grandma McCarthy – don’t worry.  She looked like a lady).

A happy, glowing Melissa McCarthy. Being 100% Herself.

Make sure you feel like yourself in your wedding dress.  Whether or not you’re a lady? That’s up to you.
