Do you keep the TV on for “background noise?” Me too. But there’s a danger. I’ll aimlessly tune in while washing dishes, and next thing you know, I’m knee deep in a “Real Housewives of Cleveland” marathon, and poof! 5 hours have gone by. Don’t get me wrong, we all need to escape into a great story once in a while (check out Wedding Movie Wednesday blog posts for non-housewife suggestions) but be careful that your “background”noise doesn’t pulls you away from being more involved in life, liberty and the pursuit of a fabulous wedding.

Be well, and love well.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey - a train wreck I can't take my eyes off, I'm ashamed to admit.
 Ashamed to admit it, but I can’t take my eyes off this train wreck.

If Music Be The Food of Love, Play Some Once In A While!

Many of us have iPods full of music we don’t listen to often enough. What we may not realize is that music is not just the food of love, but the food of memory.

When I hear Wham! Crooning ‘Careless Whisper’ I am catapulted from a Palm Springs florist

let there be music!

shop to a junior high social and am flooded with memories of a guy turning up his nose when I asked him to dance. (What a jerk. Probably still is).

When I hear Taylor Swift start singing “Hey Stephen,” a warm feeling comes over me as I remember the delicious early days when I just realized my then boyfriend (now husband) was the best thing since flexible cutting boards.

When I hear One Direction harmonize on “you don’t know you’re beautiful,” I am reminded of a promo I saw on  TLC for Randy To The Rescue using that song, and that I need to keep an eye out this summer for my hairstylist Paul Norton who is all over reality TV!

You get the picture. Your life’s major as well as not-quite-so-epic moments play out to a soundtrack. Get on iTunes, and bring back some memories of your own. Who knows where your recollections will take you!

Be well, and love well.

Why I love “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding.” Hey TLC, We Want To Plan One! Call Us!

By now most people have heard about the raucous, Swarovski crystal-covered Gypsy wedding extravaganzas shown on TLC not just on their appointed night, but pretty much any time you turn on the TV.  Some people can’t take it, they have to turn it off. Others are fascinated, like they are watching a bad traffic accident and they can’t look away.  As for us, well, we want an invitation.

Weddings are full of joy in any community. Who’s to say they should be prim and proper? We lecture over and over again that brides should have the wedding they want, not what they see in the magazines or what’s “fashionable” just for the sake of it. Those magazines also say “be yourself!” and “It’s your day – make it what you want!” These families are realizing their vision, and it’s no one’s place to judge what they think is meaningful or beautiful.  We love these weddings (and the dresses, and the cakes, and all of what the conventional thinkers would call “over the top” details) for the energy and the feeling behind it. Here’s a community that’s marching to the beat of its own drum. And what a parade!

So TLC, we know you’re casting brides.  How ’bout letting some vendors in on the action?  We’ll hang a banner- My Little Gypsy Flower Shop. Have Swarovski, will travel.

Live well, and love well.
