Wedding Dress Lesson: Who Needs An Inspiration Notebook?

Sometimes all our clippings, idea boards and swatches can seem like our most important possessions. But in fact, the heart and soul of your wedding is not among your bookmarks, pins, or inspiration notebooks.  My wedding dress was made by a creative, talented woman who basically took the ideas right out of my head. She asked me to pull some photos from magazines, and boy did I! I had a thick reference file all set to go. But at the airport, waiting for my plane to fly home to Chicago to meet her, I realized my treasured idea binder was on my vanity.

I had to start over. I hit the airport newsstand and picked up whatever random bridal mag they had, and started sorting through ideas on the plane. I found myself drawn to a dresses i never would have pulled out a week before- covered with ruffles? touch of color? I went with it it and told Julia my designer who ran with it. I got a tailored top with gorgeous ruffled skirt covered in hydrangea blossoms.  I don’t know what my dress would have looked like if I had brought the “right” pictures. All I know is that even without my precious design notebook, I knew myself and I trusted the person I hired. And I can’t imagine having worn anything else.

Our First Gay Wedding in The Land Of The Free, And The Home of The Brave.

On July 4th we celebrated My Little Flower Shop’s first gay wedding! Embracing this new freedom on Independence Day was incredibly symbolic.

Here’s our take: Gay weddings are weddings. Unqualified, no label required weddings. Bernabe_Young_Photography_by_Jessica_Fajardo_FeatureTB144_lowBecause now, LGBT people in love in the state of California have the same rights as anybody else, and having bravely fought for that freedom have the luxury of being just another couple getting married. And if we haven’t mentioned it, we LOVE weddings, and we adore our couples.  All of them.

So as far as we are concerned at My Little Flower Shop, “Gay Weddings” are weddings, like those of all our other clients getting married. They are…what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yeah. Equal.

Let Freedom Ring.

Be well, and love well.

THE WEDDING MOVIE OF THE WEEK: 80s coming of age sleeper – Mystic Pizza

While not “about” a wedding, there is one in there, qualifying Mystic Pizza for our series. This coming-of-age story  is a delicious mix of comedy, pathos and something lacking in both wedding movies and non wedding movies lately: great characters.  Three feisty girls learning about life, love, and running a pizzeria, one well played by a pre-Pretty Woman Julia Roberts. Enjoy this little piece of the 80s.  Recommended pairing – a thin crust pie with pepperoni and onions.

If you landed here actually looking for pizza in Mystic? I’m a big proponent of the communities on Chowhound – try this thread.

Note: “Wedding Movie Wednesday” is now “The Wedding Movie Of The Week.”  The only people finding my movie recs were my mom (love u mom!) and a girl in Tuscaloosa named Wednesday.
