Wedding Movies, Take 1? Take 2? Take as many as you can before Valentine’s Day

It’s the season when Hollywood breaks out the movies to bring on that itch to get married.  Coincidence that most engagements take place between Christmas and Valentine’s Day, and that there’s usually a matching break-out bunch of rom-coms featuring diamond sparklers and lacy veils around the same time? Maybe, but I don’t think so.  Here are a few of the Wedding themed films/TV entertainment coming out this December:

The Big Wedding – this one looks like it might be a Big Hit!
  • Cheerful Weather For The Wedding  – a “will she or won’t she?” set in 1930s England
  • The “Royal Pains” Wedding Episode – a 2 hour extended episode of your fave handsome MD in The Hamptons’ adventures
  • The Big Wedding – a star studded (we’re talking Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and a slate of young guns too) remake of a French wedding comedy about a not-so-happy couple keeping up appearances at their son’s wedding.

There are certainly more.  Keep your eyes peeled for dresses, bouquets and other ideas that spin your wheels. Hollywood wedding inspiration, take 1!

Be well, and love well.

Family Holiday Advice from My Little Flower Shop, Palm Springs florist

You know those movies about wacky families that really love reach other under all the craziness? Well, Julia Louis Dreyfuss may not be cooking your High Holiday brisket, and Jane Lynch may not be sorting the sweet potato casserole recipes that will end up on your Thanksgiving table, but the sweet families on the silver screen aren’t that different from yours.

Here’s how I know.  One of the men who invented the entertainment industry as we know it, Louis B. Mayer, was the son of a scrap metal dealer who became the most powerful man in Hollywood. Mayer would tell people his birthday was the Fourth of July because he was fiercely patriotic. He wanted America to be all marching bands, fireworks and apple pie. So that’s what he put in the movies. He created the images we all associate with our culture and our country.

These days, filmmakers continue to put their dreams and ideals on screen, but in a more modern way.  We see their crazy families, but with softer edges, a lot of humor and a sympathetic eye. And there’s frequently a happy ending.  With some good dialogue, could that be your Aunt Phyllis instead of Shirley MacLaine? Can you soften the lens this holiday season to see your family more as human beings who love you and less like a clown car full of confused commuters? I bet you can. Remember, Louis B. Mayer created his own reality. Think more apple pie, less fireworks.

The Hollywood Farmer’s Market is a colorful place.  With fruit and vegetable vendors, musicians and, well, Hollywood natives, there’s never a shortage of sights to see.  But this past weekend, one flower stall stopped me in my tracks.

Silverlake Farms' display at the Hollywood Farmer's Market

Silverlake Farms’ ranunculus alone were priceless, but then there were the anemones, and all sorts of other wildflowers so bright and colorful they looked good enough to eat.  Or at least good enough to randomly grab a bunch, tie it up in some ribbon, and send any high-end bride straight down the aisle.

But the best part came when I asked owner/urban farmer Tara Kolla if she sold wholesale.  She asked if I was in the industry, and I explained I worked for a floral design studio in Palm Springs.  “Oh yeah” she replied. “They were here last week.”  Apparently Greg and Al had been at the market during their pre-Oscar delivery,  and had the identical reaction to her deliciously beautiful flowers.  And when I talked to Greg, he told me they would be working out an arrangement to get their hands on some of Tara’s blooms.  “Weren’t those ranunculus amazing?” Greg asked.  Great minds think alike!

White ranunculus. Good enough to eat!
