Beating The Heat at your Palm Springs wedding

The weather gets warm here – we’re not disputing it. Wedding vendors in Palm Springs work with this challenge to provide clients comfortable celebrations while enjoying the beautiful desert scenery. Here are some insider tips on how to beat the heat and enjoy your ceremony or reception outdoors.

Provide functional favors

A basket full of parasols in your color palate serves to add color and texture to your celebration, as well as keep your guests out of the sun. Have them personalized with your names, wedding date or a motif.

Made in the shade

An obvious choice would be to provide some sort of covering. This could range from the most functional tent, to an artistic draping of fabric. You may also choose a venue and time of day that has a covered patio area.

Water…aaah

Hydration is key, and serving water, to guests upon arrival is a must. Use large dispensers and infuse the water with mint, cucumber and citrus fruit to create a refreshing pick-me-up.

RuPaul’s Drag Race, a popular reality show has nurtured a new batch of fierce queens full of advice. Here is some wisdom gleaned from them. As they say on the show, start your engines!

1) If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Accentuate your favorite assets! RuPaul accents her height, and fabulous bone structure. Flattering wedding clothes are key, and the queens on the show can testify to that! Watch this episode for some drag wedding fun, and moving moments.

2) Lashes, lashes, lashes. This explains itself– drag queens don’t put even a sparkly toe on stage without fake lashes on, ladies, so don’t think about going down the aisle without yours. Once you see how they “pop” your look, you’ll thank me. Or Ru. Or both. Gentleman? When Ru appears in his male persona on the show he is always exquisitely dressed. Take note.

3) Think outside the store where you got the box! Fashionistas didn’t pull the Carrie Bradshaw “bird on her head” wedding look out of nowhere. Innovation comes from the fringe (read: outsider artists, drag queens, and assorted other creative people) and morphs into couture. Trust me – club kids had birds on her head long before Sex and The City was a thing.

4) Be a Glamazon. It’s all in the attitude – positive and projecting you’re the hottest thing since sliced bread. When drag queens hit a stage or a runway, they’ve got a power and a confidence that to-be-weds would do well do take a dollop of to add to their “simple and elegant” mantra. Elegant is good, but Fabulous is great.

The Myth of the Perfect Wedding

When my voice broke while singing at my sister’s wedding, the guests saw a touching family moment. I thought, “Darn. Everything was perfect until I started crying.” I had a severe case of “the perfect wedding” syndrome. Here are some key concepts to keep in mind to avoid wedding planning perfectionism.

Absorb that society’s version of “the perfect wedding” is wrong

There is no wedding where everything is 100% perfect. Even the Royal Wedding had its own tulip tragedy. But if your goal is perfection, the planning never ends. There’s always one more detail. The stress and anxiety strains relationships, and precludes other happy memories being made.

Realize that you WILL Have a Perfect Wedding – because it’s yours.

As you experience the carnival ride that is your wedding day, (and as you look back on it) you’ll understand this: your wedding is perfect –every crazy moment. Because you married your true love. And that is perfection no ribbon can make more beautiful.

No two weddings are alike. One of the great joys of being a wedding vendor in Palm Springs, is that we see destination couples have beautiful, personal, perfect weddings almost every day of the week. Pinterest, BRIDES magazine and Martha Stewart don’t have exclusive rights.

As the guests trickled out of my sister’s reception, a woman put her hand on my arm. “That moment when you started crying- it made us all cry too. It was perfect.”
